Design Apprenticeship: Week 11

Over the past few weeks I’ve been given more work and I’ve just started beginning to get to grips with the fact that you can’t design everything the way that you’d like to. When I was first given client work, I didn’t bear in mind what their tastes might be. Luke knew this so worked on other designs in parallel, except he worked towards what he thought the client would like which ultimately meant that his work was more likely to be approved.

It’s definitely strange for me to work on something that isn’t particularly to my tastes, but at the same time I’m learning to appreciate the reasoning behind all of the design choices in websites/material that I usually wouldn’t pay any attention to. Despite that, I’ve always understood that rather than working in a particular style, designers should work towards the best solution (and whatever style that entails), however when I started, this went completely over my head. I dove into projects with a good idea of how I’d like it to look whilst forgetting the fact that I’m not necessarily the client’s target market. I did get a lot of guidance which has helped but I constantly found myself scrapping ideas to try out something else.

Saying all that, I’ve been glad to get the opportunity to work on those things because they are what will help me to develop the most. Working outside of my comfort zone is a real challenge, but if I didn’t I’d end up getting stuck – and bored – with what I feel most comfortable with.
