Design Apprenticeship: Week 1

Last week I began my Apprenticeship with SEO-Creative, a route I decided to take after finding out first-hand that a Degree in Graphic Design may not be the best thing for me at this moment in time. I found out about it through Oldham College and the whole process – from the initial enquiry with the college to the interview and then the first day – was surprisingly smooth.

Although I was a bag of nerves at first I’ve found myself looking forward to coming in and I’m feeling comfortable around the team. There were some hiccups (such as my start time actually being 9:00AM rather than 9:30AM), but other than those, in my opinion everything seems to be going smoothly and I couldn’t have wished for anything better! It’s great to be in an environment where everybody seems to love what they do.

I’ve already been given quite a few briefs to work on, including branding & web design. The most interesting of the things I’ve been tasked with is to design a website including a blog and its identity from the ground-up.  I’ve been given lots of freedom with it and it’s a great opportunity for me to work with responsive web design. I’ve had a chance to make lots of decisions with it, the biggest being using a 1140px grid system rather than the standard 960px grid.

All in all, I’ve had a great time so far and I’m looking forward to carrying on with the Apprenticeship.
